Is the censorship by Twitter connected to the recent SOPA/PIPA proposal? It seems strange that once everyone blacked out and petitioned the SOPA deal, Twitter decided to censor tweets. Who is to really decide what tweets are approved and which ones are not?

As we know, Twitter was a major resource for the gathering of thousands in the Arab Spring and a resource for thousands to keep people on the outside involved in the situation.

As a journalist, twitter is a main aspect for me to follow issues and concerns and I sure that it is the same for activists. So now what? Will I not be able to follow a tweet from Syria because, the U.S. government decides that I, an American should not know what it going on over there? Will I not be allowed to really know what is going on over there?

I have been covering war, physically from the inside and I know that what makes it into mainstream news, is not really the reality many times over and over. I can understand the global governments are concerned on the Arab Spring spreading onto other revolutions in different countries. Well, it already has.

What about our own 99% vs the 1% Wall Street Occupy sit ins? I believe that this censorship should be scraped, done with and it should not have been a nano second of a thought or consideration for Twitter. Here is why:

This takes away from our freedom of expression
The freedom of the right to assemble and organize
The freedom to communicate with those we want to communicate with from any border
Twitter is selling people out who need a place to have a voice
Twitter is committing social suicide
If censorship starts to happen, then we all loose.
Twitter is putting themselves in the place of the government's mercy. Not run by them, but in the end will be run by the government.

Twitter said, "no plans to remove tweets unless it receives a request from government officials, companies or another outside party that believes the message is illegal."

Okay, so the government can tell us what, who and where we can speak.
There will be a Twitter for Democratic countries and a Twitter for the other.

1) Prayer: The message is to pray with love, trust, abandonment, and concentration. She says, "Without unceasing prayer, you cannot experience the beauty and greatness of the grace which God is offering you." (Feb 25, 1989)

2) Fasting: Fasting is essential in order to achieve spiritual freedom.

Through fasting, one is better to listen to God and man and perceive them more clearly. She says, "The best fast is on bread and water. Through fasting and prayer one can stop wars, one can suspend the natural laws of nature. Works of charity cannot replace fasting...Everyone except the sick, has to fast." (July 21, 1982)

Daily Reading of the Bible: On one occasion, the Virgin Mary appeared crying and said, "You have forgotten the Bible" (Oct 18, 1984) She also said, "Dear children, today I call you to read the Bible everyday in your homes and let it be in a visible place so as always to encourage you to read it and pray."

Confession: "Make your peace with God and among yourselves. For that, it is necessary to believe, to pray, to fast, and to go to confession." (June 26, 1981. It is said, that from the first days of the apparitions, she spoke about confession.

Medjugorje is located in the southwestern region of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Six people have claimed to see visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary beginning on 24th June, 1981. The Virgin Mary appeared and told the visionaries that God sent her to our world to help us convert our hearts and lives back to him. There are over 100 documents of information, interviews and testimonies of her visitations.

On 24th of June, six children were up on a hill called “Podbrdo” and saw a “beautiful young lady with a child in her arms” She did not say anything to the children but indicated with gestures that they should come closer. On the next day, the children decided to go back to the same place in hopes to see her again. There was a “flash of light and the children looked up and saw the Virgin Mary” They prayed to her and she said, “God be with you my angels”.

For seven days, the children went back to the same place and she gave them messages to share with the people. They were messages of peach, faith, conversion, prayer and fasting.

Each year pilgrims from all over the world flock to Medjugorie to hear the Virgin Mary’s messages to the people. Only the original six and see her and they tell the pilgrims what she is saying.

The Crossing Borders Project will be accompanying the pilgrims from Italy, to document this event. The project will also be handing out disposable cameras to some of the pilgrims so they can share their stories.

Panning in four simple steps

Have you ever tried to take photographs of moving subjects and everything always came out blurry? Have you ever wondered how the sports and war photographers capture crisp images of the subject, while the background has movement or blur?

Panning is where you can capture an image where the subject is crisp and still but the background is full of motion and blurred with lines and colors. You would want to use panning to create the feeling of movement, or to capture a moving object. You can create amazing images by using the panning technique. Most sports and war photographers use this technique.

Panning solves the problem of blurry moving objects, for example cars, bicycles, and most sports. To master panning, requires a lot of patience, practice, energy and trial and errors. Don’t worry, if you keep at it, you will be able expand your image taking!

4 steps to learn panning:

1) Choose a moving subject:

For your first few attempts try to locate subjects that do not move very fast, for instance moving cars in a residential area, or running dogs and joggers in a nearby park.

2) Set your shutter speed to slower speed at 1/30 or 1/60 and your camera on Auto Focus.

3) Now, you need to learn to focus track! When your subject starts to come to the area near where you are, put the subject in view and focus on the subject following it’s movement towards you. Hold down your shutter button half way down to keep the subject in focus. Do not let go of the shutter while following your subject with your camera at the same speed it is going. Your camera will automatically adjust its focus.

Here is an image, where my AF was not focused on the subject: I chose to go to the nearby carousel located in the center of Florence.

You notice that the background is blurred, but so is my subject.

4) When the subject gets near where you are (in front or some focal point you have chosen) and shoot!

This is how a panned subject should look! There is a blurry background, while the subject is still in focus. The image shows the movement of the carousel and provides a colorful background.

Notes: You may want to play with the shutter speed to gather more blur in the background, but if you make it too low, the subject will also become blurred!

Once you get the hang of it, you can practice on faster moving objects! Have fun!

Morroco Revolution 2011 Summary

Morocco Started their demonstrations on 20th of February 2011 and are ongoing.
They are asking for constitutional reforms, more demcocracy, better health care, and educational reforms. They are against corruption, and the high unemployment rate.
The Moroccans tactics are in demonstrations, riots, protests, and burning banks.
There have been 128 injuries, and 7 deaths.
On 9th of March, King Mohammed VI decided to undertake a constitutional reform that is aimed at improving democracy. On the 14th of April he reduced sentences or pardoned the sentences of 190 prisoners.
The government approved the peaceful anti-government and on the 20th of February around 37,000 people demonstrated against the government. The word was spread by youth movements using Facebook.

The goal of the Iranian protests was against the alleged electorate fraud, human rights violations and to oust President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Thousands marched all over Iran starting on February 14 through March 16th without many results. The opposition leaders were under house arrest, denied access to telephones and the internet. Police and plainclothes Basij milita mingled among the crowds, firing tear gas and reports of live ammunition.
The opposition called for every "Tuesday" protests to persist for their rights in the hopes to gather results like Tunisia and Egypt.

Djibouti, followed the wave of revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa. They had three large protests asking for the removal of president Ismail Omar Guelleh and social reform. The first protest was on February 3, 2011 and started peacefully with 300 people, soon the protests increased to 1000 then a reported 30,000 citizens. The protests ended up with clashes with the police and two reported people killed.

The protest leaders were arrested on the 19th and 24th of February, and the revolution lost its momentum. Another protest was planned for March 11th, but did not happen.
